Jean Dunand, un artista che si distingue per il suo genio senza precedenti e ineguagliato nella lacca, è oggi uno dei pochissimi artisti occidentali ad aver praticato la tecnica giapponese di esecuzione della laccatura. Principalmente interessato a questo mezzo al quale fu introdotto nel 1912 dal noto artista Seizo Sugawara, Dunand si è fatto un nome anche sperimentando l'arredamento d'interni e la scultura, un processo di creazione di opere in metallo martellato. Ora si ricorda come uno dei principali uomini del Rinascimento del periodo Art Déco.

Jean Dunand, an artist distinguished by his unprecedented and unmatched genius in lacquer, stands today as one of the very few Western artists to have practiced the Japanese style of lacquer execution. Primarily concerned with this medium (to which he was introduced in 1912 by the well-known artist Seizo Sugawara), Dunand also made a name for himself by experimenting with interior decor and sculpture, a process of creating hammered metal works. He now stands out as one of the foremost Renaissance men of the Art Déco period.
